Essay Assignment #2 - 25 points

 SYLLABUS  SUGGESTIONS FOR ESSAY

Go to the Joslyn Museum and look at the pot #1963.480 attributed to the "Omaha Painter" and dated c. 570 B. C. Pick one other Greek vase dated after 500 B. C. (remember that 400 B.C. is after 500 B.C. but 600 B.C. is before ) from the collection to compare to it. Write a comparison and contrast essay considering the following points:

What techniques have the painters used?

How do the artists treat the human form - pose, musculature, clothing, arrangement in depth?

How have the artists used decoration - especially amount, placement and type?

Looking briefly at the rest of the collection, would you say the differences you have noticed are typical of the general development of Greek pottery?

Be sure to give specific examples - compare specific figures to illustrate your point.

NOTE: You should identify both works you are discussing fully, artist if given, type of pot, approximate date and ascession number. This information is given on the museum labels and in the catalogue, Ancient Greek Pottery, available in the Joslyn library, the museum shop or on reserve for this class at the UNO library. Please be especially careful to give full information about the pot you choose so I may identify it.

Think about the organization of your essay. Try making a chart for your notes like the following:

 Pot 1

 Pot 2
 Technique  Technique
 Human Form  Human Form
Pose  Pose
Musculature  Musculature

ETC.
