The objective part of the test will deal with the following terms and men. Be able to identify the architectural terms on a plan, elevation, or facade. The following questions should help you to review:

Review the characteristics of the following architectural styles: Early Christian, Byzantine, Ottonian, Romanesque, Gothic. Get an idea of what a typical plan from each period might look like. For the Romanesque and Gothic styles review the interiors for each style and subgroup - nave wall, ceiling?

What kind of subject matter might you expect in an Early Christian painting or sculpture? How might Jesus be represented? How does subject matter change and expand? What is the difference between the early use of image signs and more developed iconographic programs?

Review the classical and anti-classical trends in Early Christian and Byzantine art in the images on your slide list. What medium of decoration would you expect to find in an Early Christian or Byzantine church?

Review the decorative styles of the migration period. How were they used in Hiberno Saxon manuscripts?

How did Carolingian and Hiberno Saxon manuscripts differ? What were the major sources of each?

You have examples of pilgrimage road Romanesque, Norman Romanesque and Italian Romanesque on your slide list. Identify each and note the particular characteristics associated with each.

What kind of subject matter would you expect to find in the sculpture of the doorway of a Romanesque cathedral?  Look for the major characteristics of the style - think about the figures, their poses and the drapery style.

You have examples of early and high and later Gothic architecture and sculpture on your slide sheet. Identify each and look for major characteristics of each period. For architecture look for changes in the nave wall and/or vaults. For sculpture, what are the changes in figure style?

You will have three comparison essays on your test. They will be chosen from the following subjects:

A comparison between Hiberno Saxon and Carolingian manuscripts.

A comparison between Romanesque and Gothic sculpture.

A comparison between Romanesque and Gothic architecture.

The development of iconography from image sign to iconographic program.

Look at works on the slide list that could be used for these comparisons and think about your answers.

You will have several unknowns related to works on the list. As before you will need to identify the work by style and date and write an essay defending your attribution and comparing the work to one you know.
